Now And yes, all coilovers sacrifice ride quality vs. stock. That takes us to the next stage of Best Suspension 201: Coilovers. more compliant ride even when running a higher spring rate than stock. Your stock suspension will seem like you are floating on air by comparison. With only 35k, your stock suspension should be in 100% working order, assuming the previous owner didn't put cheap lowering springs on the stock struts. When comparing to the stock ride, first keep in mind that stock 93-95 is significantly more firm than 97-98. When I shopped for coilovers for my '98, I was wary about not wanting too firm a ride, and searched up hundreds of old posts on the subject. A coilover combines the abilities of a strut, with the damping of a shock, and allows the entire assembly to be installed as a single unit, rather than tearing down the vehicle's coil springs, mounts, struts, etc all separately. Coilovers allow height adjustment, whether lifting or lowering the vehicle, depending on application. Coilovers vs. Struts and Springs Ever driven a stock vehicle or even a heavily modified vehicle that severely lacks handling and control? Maybe that vehicle just plain rides rough from the factory. At Modern Automotive Performance, we’re here to change that. Usually, springs are attached to the front of the car near the shocks, or in some cases, the shock goes right through the middle space of the spring, connecting further down to the rest of the suspension system. Coilovers feature a spring coiled around the shock, working as a single element instead of two separate mechanisms,

Coilovers feature a spring coiled around the shock, working as a single element instead of two separate mechanisms, Coilovers and shocks are parts of the suspension system on automobiles. The major difference between coilovers and standard shocks is that coilovers afford drivers much more control over a vehicle's suspension system. To summarize, coilovers are generally the way to go. The level of damage you will cause your shocks when using lowering springs depend greatly on the quality of the stock shocks and how low you are looking to go. But, if you can afford to fork out the few hundred extra on coilovers that would be the better choice. Unlike lowering springs, coilovers offer a much greater range of adjustability including ride height, spring pre-load, shock damping and rebound. Also, most high-end coilover kits are lighter than the factory components they replace to reduce unsprung weight and further increase handling. By definition, a “coilover” is short for “coil spring over shock”. All this means is you have a coil spring literally sitting over your shock or strut. Other suspension systems such as leaf springs, keep the shock and spring separate.
