Actually in D/P/P, you can put up a kadabra (or something else that needs to trade to evolve) on the GTS (ask for something like a mewtwo to make sure nobody takes it), then go make another trade with somebody for something you don't care about, and when you take the kadabra back, it will have evolved as if you traded it and then got it back, but it will still be yours. It's a great way to get all the starters, and all traded Pokemon get extra experience, so trade away! Only certain Pokemon need to be traded to evolve, and some need hold items, too. Check a Pokedex for the details on who needs what to evolve, or if they just level up or don't evolve at all.
