Silver vs gold engagement ring
Gold is more durable than sterling silver. It is more scratch-resistant and it doesn’t tarnish. Both gold and silver are durable, however, because they are both precious metals. Sterling silver is 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent metal alloy. This metal alloy makes sterling silver durable enough for daily wear. Most gold rings are made of 14K gold (58.5% gold content) or 18K gold (75% gold content). I have explained in another post on gold purity why 14K is the most desirable. In fact, nearly 90% of all gold engagement rings and wedding bands are made out of 14K gold. You'll see both white gold and yellow gold labeled as a certain karat, such as 14k or 18k. This refers to the purity of gold in the metal (pure gold is 24k). 14k means that 14 parts of the metal are gold and 10 parts are alloy. So whether it's white gold or yellow gold, 14k always means 14 parts gold. You’ll find 22K gold, but most often gold comes in 18K (75% gold), 14K (58% gold) and 10K (about 42% gold). The remainder is made up of other metals — like silver, copper, nickel and zinc — to lend strength and durability. The type and percentage of metal alloys used determine the shade and color of gold. Sure, it’s easy to tell the difference between silver and gold, but white gold is a different story. Sterling Silver vs White Gold: Which is the Better Option? Gold varies significantly in its purity. For example, 18k gold is 75% pure gold, while 14k is 50% pure gold and 10k is around 41.7% pure gold. Whether it's an engagement ring or a pair of earrings, you should always weight the advantages and limitations of each metal. Generally, the metals used in white gold are nickel, silver or palladium and the properties of white gold varies on which alloy is used. Just like yellow gold, the purity of white gold is measured in karats. So, if a white gold ring is 18 karats, this means that the ring is made up of 75% gold (18 karats divided by 24) and 25% other metals. Silver can scratch easier than white gold. These metals can be differentiated by small stamps that identify the purity of the metal, for example 925 for 92.5% sterling silver, or 750 for 75% pure gold or 18k. Some people believe that white gold is warmer then sterling silver when wearing. Both silver and gold prices should be expected to fluctuate according to current market conditions. Although silver is generally less expensive than gold, other factors such as the craftsmanship of the ring, and the use of diamonds or other gemstones can drive up the costs substantially.
Silver rings tend to show more porosity than gold or platinum. Porosity describes tiny pits inside and on the surface of jewelry. These happen during the casting process are due to poor casting techniques or bad luck. Casters have a harder time dealing with silver than they do with gold and platinum.
